Hilary Duff shared that the viral reactions to her 2007 "With Love" performance have "not been a fun thing to follow me around"

[I] didn’t want to be there, doing this dance that I probably didn’t want to be doing, and didn’t feel good at the time,” she noted of performing it on The Tonight Show aged 19 in a new interview with Glamour magazine

Duff also reflected on the general perception of her in the early 2000s, calling herself "the good girl"

Hilary Duff is making it known that she wasn't always as big a fan of the "With Love" memes as everyone else was.

In a new interview with Glamour, the star, 38, explained that while her fans may obsess over the viral footage of her performing the track on The Tonight Show in 2007, aged 19, she initially saw the situation through a much more critical lens.

“That has not been a fun thing to follow me around,” she told the publication, just a week after revisiting the viral moment during a performance at the Brooklyn Paramount.

“[I] didn’t want to be there, doing this dance that I probably didn’t want to be doing, and didn’t feel good at the time,” she noted of the initial experience performing it nearly 20 years earlier. “I know people don’t look at it like that, and it’s this funny thing, but that’s how I used to look at it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Duff reflected on the general perception of her image in the early 2000s. “I’ll say that I didn’t ever feel ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ and it was funny that I was flagged as the good girl because of what people saw me doing on TV or that I wasn’t overtly sexual,” she shared. “I was a totally normal teenager doing normal teenager things.”

Duff went on to say that she has now embraced the love fans have for "With Love" and its now-iconic 2007 performance. In 2021, the star took to TikTok to duet with a user who was attempting to recreate the dance alongside footage of the original moment. Duff joined in with the caption, "HERE YOU GOOOOOOOO!" and delivered a modern rendition of the routine.

Duff also touched on reentering the music world with her new album in her Glamour chat after spending years focusing on her acting career, including starring on How I Met Your Father.

“I just felt really ready to share,” she shared of luck… or something, her new album out Feb. 20. “One, I wanted to stretch creatively, and two, I wanted to make something that I could connect with people again on the level of who I am now. I felt like people have definitely gone through some of the similar large strokes that I have in the past 10 to 15 years.”

Duff's last studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., was released on June 12, 2015, with luck… or something, marking the end of what was effectively a 10-year hiatus from music for the singer.
