Halle Berry reveals recent car accident – 'All the airbags deployed'
NEW YORK – There's a line by Chris Hemsworth's character in the new heist thriller "Crime 101" (in theaters Feb. 13) where he says, "There comes a moment when you realize you don't have as much time as you thought you had." While promoting the film alongside her costars Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry reveals she had one of those moments in real life.
"I was just in a car accident recently and we got hit head on," Berry, 59, tells USA TODAY. "I might have been knocked out for maybe a split second. And when I came to, I just saw smoke and all the airbags deployed and it was in that moment I thought, 'God, my kids could have been getting a phone call.'
"That accident really inspired me to be more mindful because I experienced something that was so scary, it lets me know how quick it can all be over."
Berry, who just announced her engagement to longtime partner Van Hunt, says she was not driving and it was a "blessing" that everyone involved was able to walk away on their own.

Halle Berry plays a disillusioned insurance agent who crosses paths with a thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a detective (Mark Ruffalo) in the thriller "Crime 101."
For Hemsworth, 42, the shift in his perspective occurred while working on the documentary "A Road to Remember." The actor's father, Craig, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Hemsworth discovered that he also has a heightened risk of the disease.
"I had a really close friend of mine say, 'This is the most important thing you'll ever make,' " Hemsworth says of "A Road to Remember." "There's a time for just pure escapism and the fantasy and the adventure, but if there can also be a message sort of smuggled in there somewhere, what a bonus."
Hemsworth notes that his three kids − India, 13, and twins Sasha and Tristan, 11 − have affected his career choices as they've gotten older. His costars nod in agreement. Ruffalo, 58, recalls being Hemsworth's age and having a similar revelation: "Like, wait a second, what is this (career) about?"

In "Crime 101," Berry plays Sharon Coombs, a disillusioned insurance broker whose stagnant career tempts her to team with Mike Davis (Hemsworth), an elusive jewel thief who is eyeing a big score after pulling off a string of heists along U.S. Route 101 in California. Det. Lou Lubesnick (Ruffalo) attempts to close in on the thief's trail, despite losing the confidence of his colleagues and dealing with a failing relationship at home.
"My character is my real-life struggle," Berry says with a laugh. In one scene, Berry's character is passed over for a previously promised promotion in favor of a younger hire. "I've been championing women during midlife and their right to be seen and cared for and not discarded. My character was sitting squarely with that dilemma of her own. It's a perfect role for me right now in my life."

Hemsworth also found familiar ground with his role; his character was raised by a foster family.
"My dad had a career in child protection as a sort of social worker," Hemsworth says. "And I was always made aware of, just through the work he was doing, what neglect and trauma does to an individual in the formative years. I had an immediate understanding or an empathy or compassion for the character."
For Ruffalo, he admired what his character stood for.
"He just can't let go of the truth or what he believes is the truth for, you know, status quo or to get along for comfortability," Ruffalo says of the detective. "He became a cop to expose the truth and get to the heart of the matter. That's appealing to me. His whole life started falling apart, but sometimes your life's got to fall apart for it to come together."
Ruffalo has no problem standing up for what he believes is the truth in real life. The actor made headlines when he was one of a handful of celebrities to wear a "Be Good" pin to the Golden Globes in support of Renee Nicole Good, a protester who was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis on Jan. 7.
Who wins: 'Crime 101' or 'The Avengers'?
The "Crime 101" ensemble also includes Irish actor Barry Keoghan. All four actors have suited up for superhero movies: Ruffalo, Hemsworth and Keoghan appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hulk, Thor and Druig respectively. As for Berry, she portrayed Storm in four different "X-Men" films.
So who would win in a battle between the superheroes and the "Crime 101" characters?
Hemsworth seems to like the chances of Thor, Hulk and Storm against the jewel thief, detective and insurance broker in "Crime 101," noting that the Marvel villain Thanos, who eventually met his demise, was quite the thief.
"We would've done it a lot quicker if we had Storm," Hemsworth adds of defeating Thanos. "It took us two movies. We would've only taken one if (Berry) were involved."
"They would've saved half a billion dollars," Ruffalo jokes before shooting a proposal to Berry, who nods approvingly. "They should just give you half a billion dollars right now to do the next one."
